Kolkata is Capital of West Bengal lies on the Hooghly of the Ganges. Its close proximity to river and sea, and hence its connection to the outside world and historical trade routes, has meant that it has developed as a major commercial centre.

Kolkata, unlike Delhi, Jaipur or Varanasi does not have a heritage which stretches back into the distant past. It is a parvenu city, which grew with the development of British power in Bengal. But a visit to Calcutta can be the most memorable holiday you have.

Kolkata served as the capital of India during the British Raj until 1911. Once the centre of modern education, industry, science, culture and politics in India, Kolkata has witnessed intense political violence, clashes and economic stagnation since 1954.
