The fascinating temples of Khajuraho, India's unique gift of love to the world, represents the expression of a highly matured civilization. Situated in the heart of Central India, in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is a fascinating village with a quaint rural ambience and a rich cultural heritage. Khajuraho is known to the world over for its temples, sex, architecture and sculpture.  Khajuraho temples are divided into three geographical divisions - western, eastern and southern.

Places to visit


Dhubela Museum - The museum is at a distance of sixty-four km from Khajuraho. You must see the exhibits that range from sculptures, weapons and paintings to garments. As it is the Images of Khajuraho are attractive enough to attract international tourists. The Images of Khajuraho are not just erotic they speak volumes. Time and again Images of Khajuraho have been printed and written about. Hindu erotic architecture has often been understood through these temples. 

Benisagar Lake - The boating and the angling facilities of the lake attract a lot many tourists from Khajuraho. Further away at twenty km from Khajuraho is the Ranguan Lake. Besides the lakes there are the waterfalls of Pandava and Ranch around Khajuraho. The Ranch waterfalls are twenty-five km away from the Pandava waterfalls. 

Panna - Panna renowned for its diamond mines, is another place to be seen while traveling to Khajuraho. The historical city is around fifty-six km away from Khajuraho. The place is a must visit for the animal lovers. At the Panna National Park you can see the wildlife in its natural habitat. 

Many of the places to see around Khajuraho are of historical interest. There is the Rajgarh Palace twenty-five km from Khajuraho in the Maniyagarh hills and the Ajaygarh Fort at eighty. You may even see the Kalinjar Fort in the Vindhya Range while traveling to Khajuraho.

Khajuraho  is located in Chattarpur district of Madhya Pradesh state.

By Air : Khajuraho has an airport that is linked with daily services from Delhi, Agra and Varanasi by Indian Airlines.  

By Train:-  There is no direct train to Khajuraho. The most convenient station is Jhansi which is linked to Delhi and other major northern cities. Satna is another convenient railway head. 

By Road:- Direct buses are available from Jhansi, Satna, Harpalpur, Agra, Gwalior, Bhopal, Indore, Chattarpur and Jabalpur. 

Climate


The climate of this region is tropical. The climate of Khajuraho is of an extreme type. 
Summers are very hot up to 47°C. On the other hand, winters can be very cold with temperature dipping down to 4°C. 

The monsoon starts from the month of July and lasts until September. The best time to travel to Khajuraho is October to March.

Fairs and Festivals

Khajuraho Dance Festival takes place at the open-air auditorium in front of the Chitragupta Temple dedicated to the Sun God and the Vishwanatha Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva every year from 25th February to 2nd March. They are situated in the Western Group of temples, which is the largest, well maintained and most easily accessible temple group of Khajuraho. Started regularly since 2002, this weeklong festival has already become legendary with its outlandish classical dance performances presented in a dreamlike setting of splendidly illuminated temples. 
Khajuraho temples present sculptures depicting various skills and arts of courtly love including dance and music in stone and what venue can be more befitting to hold the cultural festival highlighting the various classical dances of India!  
Some of the best artists and performers come from various states of India to participate in the festival and the performances including some of the best known dance styles such as the intricate footwork of Kathak, soft lyrical temple dance of Odissi, the dance dramas of Kuchipudi, Manipuri, highly stylized and sophisticated Bharathanatyam, the dance of rare and ancient civilization and Kathakali stage fights with elaborate masks. 
Recently, modern Indian dances have also found their place in the Khajuraho Dance festival. Along with the dance performances one can also see a number of craftsmen trading off their indigenous arts and crafts to the visitors.
